Capsicum is the name of a group of annual plants in the nightshade family (Solanaceae) and in topical form is promoted mainly for pain caused by conditions such as arthritis and general muscle soreness.

They are native to Mexico and Central America and Capsicum is also commonly known as red pepper, cayenne pepper, and chili pepper. The dried ripe fruit of Capsicum frutescence and Capsicum annum is rich in the photochemical capsaicin, which is the active photochemical constituent responsible for the pungent and irritating effects of cayenne pepper.
